Thirty scientists of different institutes under National Agricultural Research System (NARS) have participated at the training workshop. The workshop has arranged with the fund of NATP-II, PIU-BARC from 24-28 February. Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar inaugurated training workshop as chief guest in the morning. BARI Director General Dr. Md. Nazirul Islam presided over the function while BARI Director (Support & Services) Dr. S. M. Sharifuzzaman, Director (Planning and Evaluation) Dr. Md. Kamrul Hasan, Director (Research) Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam and Director (PIU-BARC, NATP-2) Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid were present as special guests. Chief Scientific Officer & Head of Agronomy Division Dr. Dilwar Ahmed Choudhury gave the welcome address. Scientists and officers from various divisions of BARI were also present on the occasion.
In his speech as chief guest, BARC Executive Chairman Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Bakhtiar said, so far we have achieved a lot in agriculture but there are still some challenges too.
At present about 60% of the total land in the country is unfavorable for agriculture. These include haors, saline lands, hill areas, Barind track etc. Hon’ble Prime Minister’s directive that not even an inch of soil of the country can be kept fallow, it must be brought under cultivation. Besides, in order to meet the food needs of the growing population of the country, these unfavorable lands have to be brought under agriculture. So our scientists need to invent new technologies suitable for cultivation in these unfavorable lands. I hope that through this training workshop the participants will gain a thorough knowledge in this regard.
