BARI develops, hybrid tomato seeds

Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) has developed hybrid tomato seeds (BARI HYBRID TOMATO-5) in order to fulfilling the demands of quality tomato seed together with boosting its output.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has been putting in its level best effort for multiplication works of the seed during the last couple of years for expansion among the growers level in the years to come.
Sarder Salah Uddin, Joint Director of BADC, told the journalists that the programme is being implemented at 25 BADC farms throughout the country.
He said target has been set to produce 460 kilograms of seed this season and around 25,000 bigha of land could be brought under tomato farming through using the produced seeds in next season.
Salah Uddin said tomato has been cultivated on around 75 decimal of land in Horticulture Development Center here through using the hybrid seed along with special care and nursing and the farming ground has now become greenish with healthy plant making an eye-catching look.
Hybridization activities are being done by the special trained staff on the farming ground for maintaining its quality properly. “We are very much positive over boosting tomato production of at least 30 percent on the farmers’ field,” Salah Uddin asserted.
During the previous season, he said the BADC cultivated the variety only on its research plots on an experimental basis and attained tremendous success in this regard. In line with this, massive step was adopted for reproduction of the seed and supplying those to farmers’ level in next season.
Apart from the additional production aspect, the new variety contains some other salient features like attractive size, color and taste and more preservative merits.
Azizur Rahman, a tomato farmer of Rajabari village under Godagari Upazila, said nearly 70 percent tomatoes of the country are supplied from Godagari during every winter season.
