Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in a letter immigration department yesterday to make sure that the Managing Director and some other officers of Barapukuria Coal Mine can’t go out of the country by airport or land ports.
ACC’s Deputy Director Shamsul Alam conveyed the ACC’s instruction listing that the MD of the company who has been made OSD following the disclosure of the coal scam Habib Khurshid Ahmed, GM (Admin) Abul Kashem Mia, GM (Mining) Abu Taher Muhammad Nuruzzaman Chowdhury and DGM (store) AKM Khademul Islam can’t leave the country.
Meanwhile the shut down of the Barapukuria thermal power plant; which is a coal
fired plant has disrupted power generation and supply to the Rangpur Division. The people of seven northern districts are suffering from acute load shedding as a result of the shut down of the power plant having 525 MW capacity due to a stop to coal production. Petrobangla has taken disciplinary action against the four officials including the MD of the company in connection with the disappearance of 1.42 lakh tones of coal.
In October last year, the mining authorities were asked to ensure supply of 5,200 metric tons of coal per day to normalize the power generation of these power plants.
Recently, the mine authority said that due to lack of coal reserves, the demand for power plants could not be met. For this reason, the remaining two units of the 250-megawatt unit were closed on Sunday night at 10pm. Coal mining workers said that the coal crisis is arisen due to selling coal to outsiders.
