Bar on new power links withdrawn

UNB, Dhaka :
The embargo on new electricity connections to large industries as well as commercial ventures like hotels, restaurants and shopping malls have finally been withdrawn.
The government had imposed the restriction a few years ago due to an acute scarcity of power generation.
Normally, consumers having over a load of 5 MW are deemed to be large category consumers. According to official sources, the Power Division took the decision last week to remove the embargo on
such connections after its discussion with different state-owned power generation and distribution entities.
State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid has also formally announced that the restriction on the large-scale consumers’ new electricity connections has been lifted.
“We like to give you good news that from now on there’s no restriction on new industrial or commercial connections of electricity,” he told a function marking the signing of deals with two Indian power companies at Biduyt Bhaban on Saturday.
Officials, however, said they are yet to receive the detailed instructions in this regard from the Power Division. “We’re waiting to receive the detailed instruction from the Power Division over the withdrawal of the embargo,” a top official at Desco told UNB.
Officials said the embargo was that the distribution entities had been asked that they should not give any new connections to large consumers without permission from the Power Division.
As a result, once any distribution entity received any application from large consumer for power connection, they used to simply forward it to the Power Division for permission.
There was a high-powered committee in the Power Division which finally takes the decision about the permission.
Explaining the process, Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) managing director Nazrul Hasan said his organisation has sent many petitions from large consumers for new connections.
“But now decision was made that we don’t need to send such applications to the Power Division for permission. We can judge on our own to give the connections,” he told UNB.
