Bangladesh Bank has ordered all scheduled bank branches in industrial areas to operate on July 11 to facilitate payment of salaries and festival allowances of readymade garment factory workers.
Banks in Bangladesh usually do not operate on weekends.
In a circular on Thursday, the central bank also suggested banks to pay those staff that will work on the day at those particular branches.
Bank branches at Dhaka metropolitan, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Narayanganj and Chittagong garment industry areas will operate on July 11.
The BGMEA claims over 4 million people are employed in over 4,000 clothing factories in these areas.
Before Eid, the factory owners request the central banks to keep bank branches open on holidays.
Earlier in the day, the government asked factories including garment units to pay workers their June salaries by July 10 and festival allowance by July 14 for the Eid-ul-Fitr.
