Banks extend hands for freedom fighters’ welfare

The country’s banking sector has extended helping hands for the welfare of the country’s freedom fighters and their family members.
With policy and financial supports from the authorities concerned, many banks are now closely working with various organisations to provide financial support to help improve the livelihood of the people who fought for the independence of the country. The banks are also supporting the family members of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in the War of Independence in 1971.
The areas the banks are engaged in supporting the valiant sons of the soil include their rehabilitation and healthcare and education of their children. The banks have stand besides the freedom fighters to help improve and ensure the services mainly under their CSR (corporate social responsibility) programme. There are also some usual banking services beyond CSR, which are aimed at benefiting the freedom fighters and their family members.
“Bangladesh Bank (BB) has been suggesting the banks and financial institutions to stand besides the freedom fighters and their family members, with offering various support under their CSR activities”, BB spokesperson and executive director M Mahfuzur Rahman said.
He said the central bank is also supporting the freedom fighters for their healthcare and for the education of their children.
The central bank executive director said many private banks are hiring the children of the freedom fighters.
He said Trust Bank distributed sewing machines among the family members of the freedom fighters in Bidhoba Palli (village of the widows) in Jamalpur.
Janata Bank provided Taka 5 crore 63 lakh and 50 thousand financial assistance to 328 insolvent designated freedom fighters across the country under the bank’s ‘Designated Freedom Fighter Assistant Project’.
The state-run bank has come forward with rehabilitation of the valiant freedom fighter Kakon Bibi, who lost her husband, family and many others for the country’s liberation. The bank also bought Bir Uttam Matiur Rahman a piece of land in the capital for his rehabilitation.
Managing Director of Bangladesh Development Bank Limited (BDBL) Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman said his bank are providing stipend to the poor and meritorious students of the freedom fighters’ families.
He said many freedom fighters are regularly getting financial help from BDBL for healthcare besides receiving occasional support in kinds like tin for building house and blankets and other winter clothing.
Rahman said his bank supported construction of a monument in Sylhet for the freedom fighters.
The Freedom Fighters have already been provided with Taka 10 bank accounts so they can get their honorarium through their accounts.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith early this month told the Jatiya Sangsad that the insolvent freedom fighters and their family members would get interest-free loans from both public and private banks under their CSR programme.
The minister said the government is also considering interest-free loan for insolvent freedom fighters for raising cows, and Bangladesh Krishi Bank and Janata Bank would offer the loan under their regular credit activities or CSR programme.
He said there would have some new programmes to support education of the daughters and sons of the needy Freedom Fighters. The programmes would include interest-free loans and scholarships for family members of the financially disadvantaged freedom fighters for technical education, secondary and higher secondary education, graduation, post-graduation and MPhil and PhD.
