Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith categorically said, banking services are yet to reach the doorsteps of the common people despite having 56 banks in the country. He made this assertion at inaugural ceremony of Janata Bank’s Annual Conference at a city hotel on Wednesday.
The finance minister said, “Banking service must reach to people’s door steps and it should be more smooth and easy aiming to make the country financially self-dependent”.
The performance of Janata Bank is satisfactory among the state owned commercial banks, the minister said.
Muhith appreciated the bank management for their contribution to operate the bank smoothly. The minister hoped that the bank would perform better in the future.
State Minister for Finance MA Mannan was present as the special guest at the program, presided by the Janata Bank Directorial Body Chairman Sheikh Wahiduzzman. Secretary of Financial Institution of Finance Ministry Dr M Aslam Alam and Janata Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director Abdus Salam were present on the occasion. Addressing the welcome speech, the Managing Director of Janata Bank said, the net profit of the bank was Tk1,162 crore in the last year 2015, which is the highest among the state owned commercial banks.
The bank is determined to provide modern banking services for the customers. Currently, customers of 503 branches are getting online services.
