Bangladesh’s progress in sanitation lauded

Indian High Commissioner Harsha Vardhan Shringla on Wednesday lauded Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in sanitation.
The envoy made the appreciation when he called on LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain at his office at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Harsha Vardhan also lauded the government’s various development activities, including the improvement made on communication sector and other rural infrastructures.
Besides sanitation, supply of drinking water and rural communication, different issues of bilateral interest, particularly strengthening of local government system came up for discussion during the meeting.
The minister told the envoy that currently groundwater is the source of 70 percent drinking water in Bangladesh.
A project is being undertaken to collect 70 percent of drinking water from the surface, he added.
The meeting agreed to strengthen further Bangladesh-India bilateral cooperation in future.
Secretary of Local Government Division Abdul Malek, Indian High Commission First Secretary Rajesh Uike and other officials concerned were present at the meeting.
