A Bangladeshi man named Mizanur Rahman, 20, has been shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at Shamsernagar border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district.
Mizanur Rahman’s associates had rushed him to Patgram Upazila Health Complex. However, he died before reaching the hospital.
The resident medical officer (RMO) of Patgram Upazila Health Complex, Dr Kali Prasad Sarkar, and Patgram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mohant confirmed the matter on Thursday morning.
Mizanur Rahman is the son of Nasim Uddin Bhutto from Burimari union of the upazila.
According to the victim’s family, Rangpur-61 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion and Patgram police, the incident happened around 3:30am on Thursday, when Mizanur and his associates were trying to fetch cows from India through the border.
Rangpur-61 BGB Battalion Shamsernagar Company Commander Subedar Sultan Hossain said a group of five or six people including Mizanur Rahman went to Shamsernagar border in Purbajagatber area to fetch cows.
Mizanur Rahman was shot dead by members of the Indian Raninagar-140 BSF Battalion’s patrol team at the Chuangarkhata camp, he added.
The BGB is preparing to call a flag meeting, with the BSF, with a letter of protest. The body is currently at Patgram Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Kali Prasad Sarkar said: “A few people brought Mizanur Rahman, who was shot, to the emergency department of the hospital around 4:20am. On information, I rushed there to find that he had already died before reaching the hospital.”
“Mizanur Rahman was shot at the back of his head and the bullet is still inside. The bullet entered but did not exit the occipital region of the brain. It happened because he was shot from a distance. He died due to heavy bleeding. The matter has been informed to the Patgram police,” the doctor added.
OC Sumon Kumar Mohant said: “We are preparing an inquiry report of the body. Later, the body will be sent to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital for autopsy.”
