A Bangladeshi medical officer at Jazira Upazila Health Complex in Shariatpur district has secured the highest number in the UK’s MRCP examination this year.
Young Bangladeshi physician Dr Mahmudul Hoque Jassy secured 906 marks out of 1000, where the pass mark was 454.
Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) of the United Kingdom is a postgraduate medical diploma.
The examination is designed to test the skills, knowledge and behaviour of doctors in training. It is broken into three parts: MRCP(UK) Part-1, MRCP(UK) Part-2 Written and MRCP(UK) Part-2 Clinical (PACES).
Mahmudul appeared in the first part of the examination in May last year, while the Part-2 examinations were held on October 27 this year.
The result was published on November 27.
“I never thought that I would secure the highest number. I had a feeling that I have answered questions well in the examination,” said Dr Mahmudul.
About his extraordinary success, he said, “I am not a genius. I just studied a lot. I had a habit of reading the main books since my second year of medical studentship. Those were not helpful for previous exams but that habit helped me most [this time around].”
The youngest of five siblings Mahmudul is from Dhaka’s Keraniganj.
After completing his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in 2007, he got admitted to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2008, securing 56th position.
“My father, now around 75, was a businessman. He had a desire to see one of his children become a doctor. Besides, I had an interest in the medical profession. So, I appeared in the medical admission tests and got the chance,” Mahmudul said.
