Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury today said Bangladesh is now working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Bangladesh has made significant marks in socio-economic development indicators …. And the country is now working to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs),” said the Speaker while Robert D Watkins, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to Bangladesh, made a call-on her at her Jatiya Sangsad office here.
During the meeting, they dwelt on different aspects of mutual cooperation, said an official release. They also discussed about constitution, parliamentary procedures, electoral process and activities of the UNDP, it added.
Dr Shirin, who is also Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee, said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented a time-befitting and modern constitution to the nation within a year immediately after the Independence.
The UNDP’s resident representative congratulated the Jatiya Sangsad Speaker for successfully organizing the 136th IPU Assembly in the capital in April this year and expressed his satisfaction for the arrangement of the upcoming 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference scheduled to be held in Dhaka on November 1-8 in 2017.
The UNDP representative also expressed his keenness to work together with the Jatiya Sangsad of the country on various aspects, including research and training. “The UNDP is also keen to provide cooperation to Bangladesh on development of the information technology and elimination of socio-economic discrimination,” he added.
