US ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena said here Wednesday if the present trend of economic activities continues utilizing all resources, Bangladesh will soon be an Asian tiger next to China.
The US ambassador was addressing the business leaders here today at Faridpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FCCI) conference hall in the town.
Mozena said as a close development partner of this country the USA is always with the people of this country who are hard working and want to come out from the cycle of poverty.
He said Bangladesh’s garments, leather products, jute materials, frozen shrimp, silk, ceramic products and soft ware would soon make this country an important ‘economic global prayer’.
However, he put emphasis on ‘transformation’ particularly in ensuring safety of the garment factories and labor rights so that the tragedies like Rana Plaza and Tajrin Fashions do not recur in future.
Regarding restoration of GSP he said some factory owners want to fulfill the conditions laid down for restoration of GSP but some are trying to delay the process.
He also said Padma bridge is a very important infrastructure for this country and USA tried to convince WB, ADB, JICA and IDB. The recent launch tragedy has again reminded of the importance of this bridge, he added.
The view exchange meeting was chaired by FCCI president Awlad Hossain Babor who also gave a welcome address to Mozena and his entourage.
Former FBCCI president and a leading industrialist A.K. Azad earlier in his address presented the present export and import volume with USA and stressed on the need for enhancing it for the prosperity of the country.
The meeting was also addressed by USAID Dhaka Mission Director MS. Jenina Jeruzelski who mentioned about various USAID projects going on in this country as well as in this district.
Mrs. Grace Mozena, wife of the visiting ambassador was present in the meeting.
FCCI presented some gifts, crests and flower bouquets to the visiting guests.
