Bangladesh has decided to send emergency food, medical supplies and a medical team to Lebanon that has experienced massive destruction caused by the twin explosions at Beirut Port on Tuesday evening, Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
Over 100 people were killed and 4,000 injured in Beirut, capital of Lebanon. The country had been facing political and economic crisis.
At least four Bangladeshis were killed and 100 others, including 21 members of Bangladesh Navy, were also injured.
Bangladesh Navy ship “Bijoy” that was deployed in Lebanon under the UN Peacekeeping operations and harboured at the Beirut Port on Tuesday has also been damaged. The Navy was assessing the extent of the damage.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen called Lebanese Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe on Wednesday and expressed condolences at the deaths, injuries and other damages.
“In need, Bangladesh stands ready to provide any emergency assistance to Lebanon,” he told the Lebanese minister.
Momen thanked Charbel Wehbe for providing medical treatment to the Bangladeshis injured in the explosion. There are some 150,000 Bangladeshis working in the Middle Eastern country.
