Bangladesh will join the international conference on “Protection of Civilians (POC)” scheduled to be held in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda in Africa, from May 28 to May 29. A total of 30 major countries participating in the UN Peace Keeping Missions, donor countries and representatives of concerned organizations and institutions will also join the two-day long conference. State Minister for Foreign Minister Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam leaves Dhaka today for Kigali to join the conference.
The conference would discuss about effective implementation of “protection of civilians’ (POC) adopted by UN Security Council to protect civilians from armed struggle in Rwanda. In 2008, all peace keeping missions were asked to maintain POC under the UN Security Council to protect the civilians. At present, 10 peace keepingmissions out of 16 have been working to implement the POC.
At least 95 per cent peace keepers of UN Peace Keeping Missions are engaged in protection of civilians.
