Bangladesh to buy 16 ships from China

Bangladesh will procure 16 ships from China while the vessels will join the Bangladesh fleet within two years to carry coal for power plants.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Limited at the shipping ministry meeting room today.
Of the 16 ships, six are mother bulk carrier and 10 others lighter bulk carrier and the ships will be reached to Bangladesh within two years after signing of the MoU.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Shipping Secretary Ashok Madhab Roy and other high-ranking officials were present at the signing ceremony.
BSC executive director (finance) Yasmin Afsana and CHEC’s authorized representative to Bangladesh Huang Daojun inked the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
The capacity of each mother bulk carrier would be 80,000 deadweight tonnage (DWD), while each lighter bulk carrier would have a capacity of 8-10 thousand DWD.
BSC will procure the ships under commercial loan or other loan assistance from Bank of China Limited by CHEC.
