Bangladesh struggled to avoid defeat in the first Test against Pakistan as the tourists’ scored 126 for the loss of six wickets in the second innings at the close of third day’s play (Sunday). Bangladesh trailed by 86 runs remaining with four wickets.
Bangladesh scored 233 runs in the first innings on the first day (Friday).
In reply, Pakistan piled up a mammoth 445 in the first innings on the third day (Sunday).
Bangladesh had a good start as openers Tamim Iqbal and Saif Hasan added together 39 runs in the opening partnership before Saif Hasan (16) was bowled out by Naseem Shah.
Then opener Tamim Iqbal was trapped leg before wicket by Yasir Shah when Bangladesh’s score was 53 for the loss of two wickets. Tamim made 34 from 56 balls featuring six fours.
After Tamim’s departure, Najumul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque repaired the damage contributing together 71 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shanto was trapped leg before wicket by Naseem Shah when Bangladesh’s score was 124 for the loss of three wickets. Shanto scored 38 from 87 balls including three fours and a six. Third-down Taijul Islam (0) was trapped leg before wicket by Naseem Shah when the visitors’ total was 124 for the loss of four wickets.
Then Naseem Shah dismissed Mahmudullah Riyad (0) and fulfilled his hat-trick. Fifth-down Mohammad Mithun (0) was bowled out by Yasir Shah when Bangladesh’s score was 126 for the loss of six wickets.
Mominul Haque remained unbeaten with 37 and Liton Das was on naught before the two umpires drew the bails.
Naseem Shah captured four wickets at the cost of 26 runs, while Yasir Shah picked up two wickets instead of 33 runs. Earlier, Pakistan resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 342 for the loss of three wickets.
Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 143 and 60 runs respectively.
Babar Azam failed to add any run on the third day as he was caught at the first slip by Mohammad Mithun off Abu Jayed when Pakistan’s score was 342 for the loss of four wickets.
Then Asad Shafiq (65) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Ebadat Hossain when the hosts’ score was 353 for the loss of five wickets.
Mohammad Rizwan (10) was caught at the fine leg by Mahmudullah Riyad off Rubel Hossain when the home side’s total was total was 374 for the loss of six wickets.
After dismissal of Rizwan, Haris Sohel and Yasir Shah added together 41 runs in the seven-wicket stand before Yasir Shah (5) was trapped leg before wicket by Rubel Hossain when Pakistan’s score was 415 for the loss of seven wickets.
Then Pakistan failed to build any notable partnership.
Haris Sohel notched up a respectable 75 from 103 balls. He hit seven fours and two sixes before he was caught at the deep mid-wicket by Tamim Iqbal off Taijul Islam when Pakistan’s total was 442 for the loss of nine wickets. It was Sohel’s third Test half-century.
Abu Jayed and Rubel Hossain captured three wickets each at the cost of 86 and 113 runs respectively, while Taijul Islam got two wickets conceding 139 runs.
Ebadat Hossain took one wicket for 97 runs.
