BSS, Dhaka :
Bangladesh shared 45 percent of the total remittance inflow to the least developed countries (LDCs), according a latest report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad).
The Least Developed Countries Report 2014 of the Unctad, released last week, said remittance to the Asian LDCs surged by $2.8 billion to reach at $21.2 billion, mostly due to a rise of $2 billion in Bangladesh, resulting in a total of $14 billion of flows to that country.
“In absolute terms, Bangladesh continued to be the largest recipient of remittances, receiving almost $14 billion in 2013,” the report said.
The report also said the aid flows to Asian LDCs increased by $0.8 billion to $12 billion in 2012, largely owing to the increased flows to Bangladesh ($0.7 billion).
It noted that the country registered strong growth in export in the recent years, driven mainly by exports of labour-intensive manufactured goods.
Subtitled “Growth with Structural Transformation: a Post-2015 Development Agenda,” the report focused on the recent development in trade and development in 48 LDCs as the Unctad believes that the 48 countries would be the battleground on which the post-2015 development agenda would be won or lost.
