Bangladesh shattered West Indies by six wickets in the first One Day International (ODI) of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-West Indies three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Wednesday.
Chasing the visitors’ paltry total of 122 runs in 32.2 overs, the home team sailed home in 33.5 overs making 125 for the loss of four wickets.
The Tigers made a good start as openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das put on together 47 runs in the opening stand before Liton Das ( 14) was bowled out by Akeal Hosein.
After Liton’s departure, Najmul Hossain Shanto arrived on the crease but he could stay at the pitch for a short period as he (1) was caught by Jason Mohammed off Akeal Hosein when Bangladesh’s score was 57 for the loss of two wickets.
Then Tamim Iqbal was stumped out by wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva off Jason Mohammed when the hosts’ total was 83 for the loss of three wickets.
Tamim hit a sparkle 44. His 69-ball innings was ornamented with seven fours.
After Tamim’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan (19) was bowled out by Akeal Hosein when the home side’s score was 105 for the loss of four wickets.
Then Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad guided their team to reach the winning spot.
Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten with 19 runs, while Riyad remained unbeaten with nine runs.
Akeal Hosein got three wickets for 26 runs, while Jason Mohammed took one wicket instead of 19 runs.
Shakib Al Hasan captured four wickets giving eight runs, while Hasan Mahmud grabbed three wickets instead of 28 runs and Mustafizur Rahman bagged two wickets giving 20 runs. Shakib was adjudged the Man of the Match for his superb bowling performance.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one wicket.
left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman gave his team early breakthrough as opener Sunil Ambris (7) was trapped leg before wicket by ‘Cutter Boy’ when West Indies’ score was just nine.
Then opener Joshua Da Silva (9) was caught at the gully by Liton Das off Mustafizur Rahman when the tourists’ total was 24 for the loss of two wickets.
Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan bowled out Andre McCarthy for 12 when the visitors’ score was 45 for the loss of three wickets. It was Shakib’s 150th wicket on the home ground.
Skipper Jason Mohammed (17) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Shakib Al Hasan when the touring side’s total was 56 for the loss of four wickets.
Fourth-down Nkrumah Bonner (0) was trapped leg before wicket by Shakib Al Hasan when the Caribbean team’s score was 56 for the loss of five wickets.
After Bonner’s departure, Kyle Mayers and Rovman Powell repaired the damage adding together 59 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before Powell was caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim off debutante Hsasan Mahmud when West Indies’ total was 115 for the loss of six wickets.
Powell made 28 from 31 balls featuring two fours and two sixes.
After Powell’s removal, Raymon Reifer (0) was trapped leg before wicket by Hasan Mahmud when the tourist’s score was 115 for the loss of seven wickets.
Third-down Kyle Mayers was caught at the first slip by Liton Das off Mehidy Hasan Miraz when the islanders’ total was 121 for the loss of eight wickets.
Mayers hit a polished 40. His 56-ball innings was studded with four fours and a sixer.
After dismissal of Mayers, Akeal Hosein was caught at the slip by Liton Das off Hasan Mahmud when the Caribbean team’s score was 122 for the loss of nine wickets.
Number-9 Alzarii Joseph (4) was bowled out by Shakib Al Hasan and West Indies’s innings came to an end.
