Bangladesh scored 242 for the loss of five wickets in the first innings against West Indies on the first day of the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.
The Tigers had a shaky start as opener Tamim Iqbal (9) was bowled out by Kemar Roach when Bangladesh’s score was 23.
After Tamim’s dismissal, Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto repaired the damage contributing together 43 runs for the second wicket partnership before Shanto was run out by a joint-effort of Joshua Da Silva and Kyle Mayers when the hosts’ score was 66 for the loss of two wickets.
Shanto scored 25 from 58 balls including three fours.
After Shanto’s departure, Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque mended the innings adding together 53 runs in the third wicket stand before Mominul Haque was caught at the short midwicket by John Campbell off Jomel Warrican when the home side’s total was 119 for the loss of three wickets.
Mominul made 26 from 97 balls with two fours.
After Mominul’s dismissal, Shadman Islam was trapped leg before wicket by Jomel Warrican when Bangladesh’s score was 134 for the loss of four wickets.
Shadman top-scored with 59 runs. He hit six fours in his 154-ball patient innings.
Shadman fulfilled his second Test half century using 128 balls with six fours.
After Shadman’s departure, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan contributed together 59 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Mushfiqur was caught at the first slip by Rakheem Cornwall off Jomel Warrican when the Tigers’ total was 193 for the loss of five wickets.
Mushfiqur made 38 from 69 balls featuring six fours.
After Mushfiqur’s dismissal, Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das built a worthy partnership.
They put on together 49 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket partnership before the bails were drawn for the first day.
Shakib remained unbeaten with 39. He struck four fours in his 92-ball knock.
Liton Das remained unbeaten with 34. His 54-ball innings saw six fours.
Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the day’s most successful bowler. He grabbed three wickets at the cost of 58 runs.
Right-arm pacer Kemar Roach took one wicket for 44 runs.
