Bangladesh reports first black fungus death

Bangladesh has reported the first death related to mucormycosis, also called Black Fungus. The rare but fatal fungal infection disease ‘Black Fungus’ is spreading like wildfire in neighbouring India. It was declared an epidemic in the South Asian nation.  
Two cases of black fungus have been detected at Birdem Hospital in patients who have recovered from Covid-19. One of the patients is now undergoing treatment at the hospital in the capital while another was shifted to another hospital.
Amid this fearing, now, the first death related to the disease has been reported in the country.
A patient died at Birdem Hospital in the capital on May 22. The hospital authorities said on Tuesday that the test showed that the patient was suffering from mucormycosis or black fungus along with other diseases.
Professor M Delwar Hossain, head of respiratory medicine at Birdem Hospital, on Tuesday morning said that a 65-year-old patient died three days ago. He, who was suffering from uncontrolled diabetes and kidney problems, recovered from coronavirus. It was not known that he was suffering from mucormycosis while he was undergoing treatment. After death, he was diagnosed with the rare fungal disease.
