A marvellous century by Tamim Iqbal guided Bangladesh to pile up a healthy total of 305 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 50 overs against England in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy at Kennington Oval in London, England on Thursday.
Tamim Iqbal hit a terrific 128. His 142-ball innings was decorated with 12 fours and three huge sixes. He reached his ninth ODI century using 124 balls with 11 fours and a sixer.
Bangladesh made an auspicious start as Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar, the two openers scored 56 in the opening stand before Sarkar was caught at the deep cover by substitute JM Bairstow off Ben Stokes.
After dismissal of Soumya, Tamim and Imrul Kayes produced together 39 runs for the second wicket stand before Imrul Kayes (19) was caught by Mark Wood off Liam Plunkett when Bangladesh’s total was 95 for the loss of two wickets.
After removal of Kayes, Tamim and Mushfiqur Rahim contributed together 166 runs for the third wicket partnership before Tamim Iqbal was caught by Jos Buttler off Liam Plunkett when the Tigers’ score was 261 for the loss of three wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim played a respectable innings. He notched up a sparkle 79 off 72 balls. He hit eight fours before he was caught at the long-off by Alex Hales off Liam Plunkett when the team’s total was 261 for the loss of four wickets. It was Mushfiqur Rahim’s 25th ODI half century.
Shakib Al Hasan failed to shine with the willow as he (10) was caught at the long-on by Ben Stakes off Jake Ball when Bangladesh’s score was 277 for the loss of five wickets.
Fourth-down Sabbir Rahman scored a notable 24 from 15 balls featuring three fours before he was caught at the long-on by Jason Roy off Liam Plunkett when Bangladesh’s total was 300 for the loss of six wickets.
Opener Soumya Sarkar made 28 from 34 balls hitting four fours and a sixer.
Liam Plunkett was his team’s most successful bowler. He captured four wickets at the cost of 59 runs.
Ben Stokes and Jake Ball got one wicket each conceding 42 and 82 runs respectively.
