Bangladesh has participated in the United Nations International Bazaar (UNIB) at East River Plaza of the UN Head Office here, according to a message received on Tuesday.
Responding to the call of the UN Secretary General’s Spouse and Honourary President of ‘UN’s Women Guild’ Catarina vaz Pinto Guterres, the ‘UN Women Guild’, ‘United Nations Delegations Women Club’ , ‘United Nations African Mothers Association’ and member countries jointly organized the fair (Bazzar) from 10am to 4pm yesterday (Monday).
“In the fair Bangladesh set up two stalls – one for traditional food and snacks item while another one to showcase local craft and handicraft products,” said the release issued by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
The traditional food items and cultural programmes drew attention of the visitors in a large scale.
Masud Bin Momen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, visited the fair while diplomats, spouses of diplomats, their family members and, officials and employees concerned to the mission were also present on the occasion.
UN International Fair is usually organized every year aiming to raise funds for a number of worldwide charities by selling food, high-end items, handicrafts, and works of art and lottery tickets for donated prizes.
The Bangladesh envoy said the income of the fair will be spent through the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the forcibly displaced Rohingyas of Myanmar.
“Bangladesh is now sheltering about 1.1 million Rohingyas who have taken shelter in Bangladesh territory becoming the worst victims of the military atrocities in their Rakhine state of Myanmar last year. This fund will be very useful for them.” he added.
