‘Bangladesh on way to become self-reliant on electricity’

Bangladesh has been marching forward successfully in recent years on the way to become self-reliant on electricity through further increasing its own power generation capacity.
Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Nazmul Hoque Prodhan said this while switching on newly built power supply lines for Kashimpur Sarderpara village under Sadar upazila in Panchagarh on Sunday afternoon as chief guest.
With the switching on of the power supply lines, 54 residential houses have been provided with electricity in the village under Gorinabari union of the upazila in the sub-Himalayan district.
Thakurgaon Polli Bidyut Samity of the Rural Electrification Board has (REB) implemented construction works of the two-kilometer long power supply lines at about Taka 11 lakh to fulfill the long-cherished demand of common people of the village.
Chairman of Gorinabari union Altamas Hossaine Lenin presided over the ceremony participated by the officials of REB, hundreds of men, women, youths, farmers, professionals, civil society members, teachers, students and local elite.
Panchagarh Regional Deputy General Manager of REB Mohammad Yunus, Joint Secretary of Atoari upazila Awami League Advocate Anisur Rahman, former chairman of Gorinabari union Suben Barma, district JSD General Secretary Abdus Sattar, Gorinabari union JSD President Azizul Islam attended as the special guests.
While addressing the ceremony, the speakers said Bangladesh has already achieved laudable success in generating power on its way to achieve self- reliant on electricity following effective steps taken by the government during the past six years.
The chief guest congratulated local people and suggested the authorities, officials and employees concerned to ensure excellent management in power supply systems to make best use of electricity and reduce system loss to the minimum.
He also asked the villagers for sincerely using power, utilisation of energy saving bulbs and digital metres, timely payment of electricity bills, less power consumption during peak hours and preventing illegal power connections to save electricity.
