Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mohammad Ziauddin said Bangladesh is working closely with the US and other friendly countries to stamp out violent extremism in pursuance of its anti-terrorism ‘zero tolerance’ policy, according to a message received here on Friday.
“Bangladesh is closely working with the US, neighbors and other friendly countries to weed out extremism and terrorism from the country and even beyond,” said the Bangladesh envoy.
The envoy made the assertion while he had a meeting with Republican congressman from California Dana Rohrabacher, who is the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats and also a member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and Pacific, at Capitol Hill in Washington on Thursday.
In this context, Ziauddin mentioned the existing cooperation between Bangladesh and the US in intelligence sharing and other capacity building measures to eliminate extremist elements from Bangladesh.
He also briefed him on the existing communal harmony in Bangladesh and secular values on which the country has been founded. He highlighted the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina against all forms of terrorism and violent extremism.
The ambassador underscored that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina being a victim of terrorism had been steering the country with a determined leadership to eliminate terrorism and violent extremism.
He highlighted the initiatives taken by the current government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to contain the menace of terrorism and violent extremism in society.
Ziauddin also recalled the brutal assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most members of his family on August 15, 1975, and subsequent usurpation of the state power by military regime and how religious politics crept into Bangladesh.
Congressman Rohrabacher thanked the ambassador for the briefing. Toufique Hasan, minister (political) of the Bangladesh embassy, was present.
