Int'l Day for Disaster Risk Reduction observed: Bangladesh is a role model

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction observed in Barisal on Thursday October 13 with the slogan “Live To Tell: Raising Awareness, Reducing Mortality”.
Different governments and non-government organisations celebrated the day calling to raise awareness about importance of disaster risk prevention and on how people and communities can reduce disaster risks.
Programmes of the day include rally and drill about disaster risk prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
After holding a procession on city roads a discussion meeting and show of drill and exercise held at Barisal Government Zilla School on this occasion.
Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman presided over the discussion meeting with Md. Gaus, divisional commissioner, as chief guest.
Among others, Saidur Rahman Rintu, water transport businessman and Sadar upazila chairman, Abul Kalam Azad, additional deputy commissioner, Abul Hossain, acting deputy director Fire Service and Civil Defense, Sabina Yasmin, Papiya Jasmine, teachers, Muhammad Hossain, AL leader, addressed the meeting.
The speakers said issue of disaster risk management is important for Bangladesh as the country densely populated and situated in natural disaster prone region.
Report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) said that Bangladesh incurred an average annual loss equal to 1.8% of GDP due to natural disasters in the past two decades.
Although Bangladesh became a role model in certain type of disaster management like cyclone and flood, but pre and post disaster management, risk prevention yet to be upgraded and standardised, the speakers told.
Now the threats of earthquakes, erosion, increase of sea level, effect of global warming haunting our country, they cautioned.
BSS from Manikganj adds: The International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed here on Thursday under the initiatives of the district administration.
To mark the day, a newly built Flood Shelter Center come School building of Ralla Abdul Jabbar Polytechnic Institute was inaugurated.
A colourful procession was brought out from Ralla Abdul Jabbar Polytechnic Institute on the occasion.
The district administration and Department of Disaster Management also jointly organized a discussion meeting held at the auditorium of the institute.
Bashir uddin Thandu, a valiant freedom fighter and Saturia Upazila Chairman formally inaugurated the center as the chief guest.
Ministry of Disaster Management constructed the two-storied Flood Shelter center at a cost of Tk.1.18 crore.
