Bangladesh, for the first time, is holding a 3-day international conference on hydrographic survey for the development of ‘blue economy’ at a local hotel here.
Hosted by Bangladesh Navy, the conference has been able to attract 57 concerned delegates from 26 countries, either member or associate member or observer, of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC), said an ISPR press release.
The press release said the 16th NIOHC conference is set to highlight the significance of hydrographic survey charts and publications as hydrographic works are proven to be the most fundamental to develop and sustain the ‘blue economy’ concept.
Two-thirds of the world is covered by sea and about 90 percent of world trade is carried out through the blue waters of sea. The Hydrography ensures safe navigation of ships at sea, said the release.
Chief of Naval Staff Vice- Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed inaugurated the conference as the Chief Guest.
Bangladesh is currently holding the NIOHC chairmanship for the year 2015-2016.
Delegates from the member states that include Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UK as well as associate member states like Australia, France, Oman, Seychelles, USA are participating in the event. Beside, delegates from Russia and Sudan are joining as observers.
Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and NIOHC Chair Rear Admiral M Makbul Hossain presided over the inaugural session of the conference that would end on Wednesday.
The hydrographic activities and its achievements, mutual cooperation, technical assistance and training support in the field of hydrographic matter were discussed in the conference.
