Bangladesh fought back scoring 175 for the loss of two wickets on day 2 against New Zealand in the first Test at Mount Maunganui in New Zealand on Sunday.
Earlier, New Zealand were dismissed for 328 in the first innings on the second day.
Bangladesh trailed by 153 runs in the first innings.
Bangladesh made a good start with two openers Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy put on together 43 runs before Shadman Islam was caught & bowled Neil Wagner.
After Shadman Islam’s dismissal, Mahmudul Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto mended the innings contributing together 104 runs in the second wicket stand before Shanto was caught at the gully by Will Young off Wagner when Bangladesh’s score was 147 for the loss of two wickets.
Mahmudul Hasan remained unbeaten with 70. His 211-ball innings was decorated with seven fours.
Mahmudul Hasan reached the fifty-run landmark playing 165 deliveries hitting five fours.
It was Mahmudul Hasan’s maiden half-century in Test cricket.
Najmul Hasan Shanto knocked a sedate 64. His 109-ball innings was belted with seven fours and a sixer. Shanto reached his fulfilled his second half-century in Test cricket using 90 deliveries including six fours and a sixer.
Shadman Islam scored 22 from 55 balls with one fours.
Mominul Haque remained unbeaten with eight runs.
Wagner bagged two wickets for 27 runs.
Earlier, the hosts resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 258 for the loss of five wickets.
Henry Nicholls resumed his first innings with the over-night score of 32 runs.
Nicholls could add more 43 runs on the second day. Nicholls notched up a superb 75. He hit 12 fours in his 127-ball knock. It was Nicholls’ 12th half-century in Test cricket. Apart from Nicholls, no batter of Kiwis shone with the willow on the second day.
The batters of the home side could build only one remarkable partnership on the second day. Nicholls and Kyle Jamieson put on together 32 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Jamieson (6) was caught at the long-on by Shadman Islam off Mehidy Hasan Miraz when New Zealand’s score was 297 for the loss of seven wickets.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shoriful Islam, Mominul Haque got success on the second day.
Right-arm spinner Miraz and left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam grabbed three wickets each giving 86 and 69 runs respectively.
Mominul Haque claimed two wickets for six runs.
