Bangladesh emerged champions in Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone International Volleyball championship beating favorite Kyrgyzstan by straight 3-0 set in the final held on Tuesday at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium at Mirpur in the city.
With the day’s victory, Bangladesh not only clinched the maiden title of the championship but also took sweet revenge of their defeat to Kyrgyzstan in group phase match.
Bangladesh won the first set by 25-22 points and followed up with a 25-23 point win in the second set. When Bangladesh were leading the third set by 7-6 points Kyrgyzstan pulled out of the match following an injury to one of their players, forcing the referee to declare Bangladesh as the winners.
Earlier, on the day, Nepal finished third in the championship defeating the Maldives by 3-1 set in the place-deciding match.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, who is also chairman of tournament organizing committee, was the chief guest in the final and distributed the prizes among the winners.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr, Biren Sikder MP, Salman F Rahman, private sector development affairs adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh Olympic Association Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza, were among others, also present at prize distribution ceremony.
