Bangladesh scores 81 and ranks 15 out of 144 countries in the law and order index issued by Gallup, a Washington-based analytics and advisory organization, in its latest report published on Tuesday.
According to Gallup, the law and order index is a composite score based on people’s reported confidence in their local police, their feelings of personal safety, and the incidence of theft and assault or mugging in the past year.
The higher the score, the higher the proportion of the population that reports feeling secure. The index score for the world in 2019 was 82 out of 100 – unchanged from the previous year. Ninety countries posted scores lower than this average. Bangladesh received 81 along with Pakistan and ranks 15 on the list.
In terms of score, Bangladesh’s position in South Asia is above that of India, Nepal and Afghanistan, but lags behind that of Sri Lanka.
Among South Asian countries, India scored 79, Pakistan 81, Sri Lanka 83, Nepal 73 and Afghanistan 43, which ranked alone as the lowest in the world for the second consecutive year.
The results are based on telephone and face-to-face interviews with approximately 1,000 adults in each country, aged 15 and older, conducted throughout 2019 in 144 countries and areas, the Gallup report said.
Scores worldwide ranged from a high of 97 in Singapore, which tops the list nearly every year.
According to the 2019 index, Bangladesh scored 80. In other words, compared to the country’s law and order situation in 2018, there was some improvement in 2019.
In the last one year, there has been a decline in the law and order situation in India. India’s score in the 2019 index was 82, which has come down to 79 this time.
On the other hand, Pakistan has made significant improvements in law and order. Although the country scored 77 in 2019, this time it has scored 81, similar to Bangladesh.
Besides, Myanmar’s law and order situation is also better than Bangladesh’s, according to the index. Myanmar scored 85 in 2019 and this time scored 82.
According to the index, the most developed countries in terms of law and order are Singapore and Turkmenistan. Both countries scored 97. They were followed by China obtaining the second position through scoring 94.
Surprisingly, the United States found no place among the top 10 most secure countries in the world. It did fare better than the global average in 2019, with a law and order index score of 85.
The US is in the company of European countries, such as Ireland, France and Sweden – which all scored an 85 – and its neighbor to the north, Canada, which scored an 86.
