13th South Asian Games: Bangladesh earn mixed success

Bangladesh earned mixed success in the 13th South Asian Games, which concluded in Nepal recently. Bangladesh secured 142 medals. Of them, Bangladesh grabbed 19 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 90 bronze medals. India took the top spot securing 174 gold medals, while hosts Nepal earned the second position with 51 gold medals. Sri Lanka achieved the third position with 40 gold medals. Pakistan earned the fourth position with 31 gold medals and Bangladesh took the fifth spot. It is noteworthy that India did not send their full-fledged team. Bangladesh Football team, shooters, swimmers and athletes frustrated the 16 crore sports lovers of the country.
Hosts Nepal arranged and finished the 13th South Asian Games very successfully. The gala opening ceremony and the concluding ceremony were eye-catching and entertaining.
Bangladesh archers showed a gimmick performance bagging 10 gold medals out of ten gold medals.
Bangladesh captured six gold medals in the different events of Archery Competition of the 13th South Asian Games at Pokhara Stadium on December 8.
Ruman Sana, Tanjamul Islam and Hakim Ahmed of Bangladesh beat Kavisha Delpatadu, Sajeeb De Silva, Kumar Herath of Sri Lanka in the final of the men’s recurve team event to clinch gold medal.
Earlier, Bangladesh defeated Nepal 6-0 in the semi-final.
Eti Khatun, Mehnaz Akter Monira, Beauty Roy of Bangladesh overcame Thisari Madushika Silva, Rehana Tayabally, Malsha Dilhani of Sri Lanka in the final of the women’s recurve team event to bag gold medal.
Ruman Sana and Eti Khatun of Bangladesh eased past Sonam Dema and Kinley Tshering of Bhutan in the final of the recurve mixed team event to grab gold medal.
Bangladesh men’s team earned gold in the men’s compound event defeating Bhutan in the final.
Bangladesh women’s team earned gold in the compound event beating Sri Lanka women’s team in the final.
Bangladesh won sixth gold in the mixed compound event beating Bhutan in the final. .
Archers of Bangladesh secured more four gold medals at Pokhara in Nepal on December 9.
Suma Biswas of Bangladesh beat Sri Lankan Anuradha Karunaratne by 142-134 points in the final of the women’s individual compound event gold.
Sohel Rana edged past Tendon Dorji of Bhutan by 137-136 points in the men’s individual compound event to bag gold for Bangladesh.
Eti Khatun defeated Sonam Dema of Bhutan by 7-3 points in the women’s recurve event to clinch gold medals for Bangladesh.
Archery Sensation of Bangladesh Ruman Sana claimed the gold after crushing Kinley Tshering of Bhutan by 7-1 points in the men’s recurve event.
Mabia Akhter, Ziarul Islam and Fatema Mujib won gold medals for Bangladesh in their respective events of the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) in Nepal on December 7.
Mabia Akhter clinched gold at the 76kg weight category in weightlifting event.
Mabia lifted total 185kg to clinch gold. She lifted 80kg in snatch and 105kg in clean and jerk.
It may be mentioned that Mabia Akhter won gold medal in the 12th South Asian Games in 2016.
Ziarul Islam captured gold at the 96kg weight category in weightlifting event.
He lifted total 262kg to earn gold. He lifted 120kg in snatch and 142kg in clean and jerk.
Meanwhile, Fatema Mujib secured gold in fencing. Fatema Mujib won gold in women’s individual event.
Dipu Chakma of Bangladesh clinched first gold medal for Bangladesh in taekwondo event.
Bangladesh captured three gold medals in Karate in the 13th South Asian (SA) Games on December 3.
Al Amin bagged the gold medal for Bangladesh in the 60kg weight category in Karate event beating Jafar of Pakistan by 7-3 points in the final at Nepal Karate Academy in Lalitpur of Nepal.
Earlier, Al Amin defeated Rajib Podasani of Nepal in the semi-final by 7-4 points on the same day.
Humayra Akter earned gold for Bangladesh at the 61kg weight category of Karate crushing Anu Gurong of Nepal by 5-2 points in the final. Earlier, Humayra defeated Gul Naz from Pakistan in the sami-final by 4-0 points.
It may be mentioned that Humayra clinched the first medal for her country though it was a bronze medal.
Marzan Akter clinched gold for Bangladesh at the 55kg weight category in Karate after defeating Kousar Sana of Pakistan by 4-3 points in the final.
Earlier, Marzan beat Manish Chowdhury of Nepal by 2-1 points in the semi-final.
Bangladesh women’s cricket team bagged gold medal in the Cricket Competition beating Sri Lanka by two runs in the final.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh cricket team gained the 19th gold medal after beating their counterpart Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the final.
