UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh clinched the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Girls’ Regional (South and Central) Championship title dethroning Nepal with a solitary goal in the final at Nepal Army Physical Training Center ground, Lagankhel, Kathmandu on Sunday.
Maria scored the all important goal in the 16th minute for Bangladesh’s maiden title.
Taking the 1-0 lead in the first half Bangladesh created immense pressure on Nepal playing a solid attacking game in the 2nd half, but their entire attempts went in vain.
Bangladesh skipper Krishna Rani could have extended the margin in the 54th minute as she get inside box to take a left footer shot in a one-to-one position, but the ball went wide edging over the crosspiece.
Earlier, in the 34th minutes Krishna spoiled another chance to double the lead as her close ranged shot went out wide.
Nepal Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli handed over the championship trophy and medals to the winners as the chief guest in the closing function while Minister for Youth and Sports Satya Narayan Mandal was present as a special guest with others.
Bangladesh U-14 girls’ team head coach Golam Rabbani Choton expressed his happiness with this maiden title win, but a bit dissatisfied over the match result as the skipper Krishna Rani spoiled four opportunities to score in the final.
“We’re lucky as we’ve registered the title; we’re happy with the win, but I’m not satisfied with the result as skipper Krishna Rani missed four chances,” said the coach at post-match press conference.
Terming Nepal a good team, Choton observed that earlier Nepal was stronger than Bangladesh, but Bangladesh seemed stronger today.
On the other hand Nepalese coach Kishor KC accepted that his side hadn’t played well in the final saying, “I’m agreed, my girls didn’t play good today.”
Kishor KC praised goalie Rabita Kumari for her performance in the final and observed a good future of women football in Nepal.
“My goalkeeper played well, but the goal they conceded was a silly one; I can see a good future of women football in Nepal.”
In their rout to final berth Bangladesh defeated Iran by 2-0 goals in the semifinal while Nepal beat India by a solitary goal in another semifinal.
The final battle of the seven-nation participating — Bangladesh, host Nepal, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, IR Iran and Sri Lanka — football championship, originally scheduled to be held at Dashrath Stadium in April, had been canceled due to a devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25 a day before the final.
