The Bangladesh Bank has asked the Home Ministry to arrange for better protection at banks during the festive season after the Joypurhat heist.
The banks have also been asked to beef up their own security, says Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and executive director Mahfuzur Rahman.
Robbers decamped with TK 20 million after knocking down a wall of a bank branch at Joypurhat on Friday night.
“We have asked the Home Ministry for tightening security arrangements at all bank branches and offices of other financial institutions after the heist in Joypurhat. Let us treat this as an accident and ensure it never happens again,” Rahman said.
A huge quantity of gold was looted from a bank branch at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
Huge bank heists have also taken place at Sonali Bank branches at Kishoreganj and Bogra.
“Bangladesh Bank has issued a directive for more security at the branches. We have also asked for all bank to strengthen branch security on their own,” said Chairman of the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) Ali Reza Iftekhar, who is also executive director of Eastern Bank.
After the heist at BRAC Bank branch at Joypurhat, the state-owned Agrani Bank has asked its branches to keep minimum cash in its vaults.
A circular has been issued to keep the vault cash to a minimum.
