Bangladesh is now willing to get the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, according to a senior DGHS official.
Bangladesh has expressed the interest as COVAX, an initiative to make Covid-19 vaccines globally available, offering the vaccine, wants to know whether the country is interested in it. “We are working to submit a complete plan as there are some challenges we will face in preserving and distributing the vaccine at the field level,” Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, additional director general (planning and development) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told the media on Sunday.
“This vaccine requires very low temperature to be stored – -70 degree Celsius temperature. Besides, its injecting tools are also different. However, we are working to address all the challenges involving the vaccine,” Ms Flora added.
Earlier on Thursday, COVAX wrote to Bangladesh, seeking to know by January 18 whether Bangladesh is interested in the Pfizer vaccine.
Bangladesh has recently approved the urgent use of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca with Oxford University, and reached an agreement with the authorities concerned to get 5.0 million doses of the vaccine every month for the first six months until June.
