Panic costs life: Bangladesh also jolted

Earthquake jolted Dhaka and other parts of the country on Tuesday afternoon. It struck at around 1:05pm. The tremor was also felt in the Indian capital Delhi and other north Indian cities simultaneously.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake originally hits in
 Nepal near the town of Namche Bazar, closure to the Mount Everest, according to the US Geological Survey. It was measured at a depth of 18.5 km. Bangladesh Meteorological Department officials confirmed the information and said that tremors from the quake shook different parts of the country. Earthquake specialist Syed Akhter Humayun, Professor of Geology Department of Dhaka University, told The New Nation, “Tremors are likely to be aftershocks of the latest’s deadly earthquake. “These shocks can continue for upto a year,” he said. Panic-stricken people rushed out of their houses and office buildings for safety yesterday as the tremor hits the city.
A woman died while rushing out of her house in panic during the quake. The deceased was identified as Nurun Nahar, 62, a resident of Khuniya Bhita in Tetulia upazila. Her relative said she died of cardiac arrest as she got panicked while rushing out of his house during the earthquake. Government Victoria School management at Sherpur closed the institution for an indefinite period after the school building tilted on Tuesday’s earthquake. Students of the school got panic after two-storied school building tilted. Ten students were injured while coming out hurriedly. Deputy Commissioner Md Zakir Hossain visited the affected school, with concerned district officials.
Deputy Commissioner said instructions were given to close the school for an indefinite period till repair and risk assessment being carried out.
