DU Correspondent :
Writers, cultural activists, and eminent personalities on Thursday protested near the main gate of the Bangla Academy in the capital against their decision to bar the publishing house of ”Srabon Prokashoni” in the Ekushey Book Fair for two years, with request to allow the publishing house in the fair.
Kafil Ahmed, a noted singer and cultural activist, said that the bar on Srabon Prokashoni was illegal. It won’t be accepted. The Bangla Academy must immediately withdraw its decision.
Khushi Kobir, Coordinator of Nijera Kori, and Faizul Hakim Lala of Jatiya Mukti Council, also spoke among others.
Bangla Academy drew widespread criticism on the social media last night and people got to know its decision about Srabon Prokashoni because the publishing house played “greater interest in the Ekushey fair”.
During this year’s book fair, the academy shut down Ba-Dwip Prokashon’s stall for selling a book that “hurt religious sentiments”. Later, law enforcers arrested three persons, including the editor of the “controversial book”.
According to Bangla Academy officials, Srabon Prokashoni might have taken a role to sell the book inside the academy’s fair. Hence, the authorities barred the publishing house in the fair for the next two years.
However, Robin Ahsan, owner of Srabon Prokasoni, said he did not take any role regarding selling of the book in the fair, but he along with others had protested the arrests.
