A Dhaka Court on Tuesday sent Abdul Majed, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, hours after he had been arrested in the capital city early on the day.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, AM Zulfikar Hayat, passed the order after Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police produced him in the court.
Soon after the court order, Abdul Majed was sent to Dhaka Central jail by a prison van, said Jafor Hossain, Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
No lawyer took part in the hearing on behalf of Abdul Majed in the court, added the police official.
The court also sent the order sheet to Dhaka District and Sessions Judge’s Court, which earlier sentenced him to death in the case.
Abdul Majed would be shown arrest in the case from this court, said Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate Hemayet Uddin Khan Hiron.
After the court order, the public prosecutor said, “Abdul Majed was sentenced to death by the courts after maintaining all the procedures. So there is no scope for him to file any appeal against his conviction in any court. He can, however, file an appeal to the President for clemency.”
Earlier, Md Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told the reporters that a CTTC unit had arrested Abdul Majed from Mirpur area of the city around 3:45 am on Tuesday.
He was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and was produced in the court at around 12.00 pm, said Jafor Hossain.
Inspector of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit Jahurul Haq submitted a report in the court in this regard. The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, upheld the death sentences of Abdul Majed and 11 other self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu. Of them, AK Bazlul Huda, Syed Faruk Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Mohiuddin Ahmed and AKM Mohiuddin, were executed on January 27, 2010.
Six other convicts including Abdul Majed remained at large. Another condemned killer, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe in June, 2001.
Remaining five absconding killers are Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, Noor Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Moslehuddin Khan.
A taskforce comprising ministers and high officials of the foreign, the law and the home ministries was formed in 2010 to locate and bring back the fugitives.
The government had also made global appeals in bilateral, regional and international forums to track down the convicts.
