Speakers at a discussion on Wednesday said the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had shielded the country’s independence and sovereignty.
January 10, 1972 was not only Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day, but also shielded the country’s independence and sovereignty, they said.
Bangabandhu Parishad organized the discussion at the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) at Segunbagicha here marking the historic Homecoming Day with Awami League Advisory Council Member and Bangabandhu Parishad General Secretary Dr S A Malek in the chair.
President of Bangladesh Economic Association, Professor Dr Abul Barakat, president of Jatiya Press Club Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, former vice chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Dr Mohith-ul-Alam and former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, Khandakar Ibrahim Khaled, among others, addressed the discussion.
Malek said, “The fruits of independence have not yet been reached to the doorsteps of all the people due to assassination of Bangabandhu. Now, Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been giving all out efforts to accomplish the unfinished works of her father.”
Bangabandhu, the undisputed leader of the nation and supreme commander of the country’s Liberation War, returned to the sacred soil of independent Bangladesh via London and New Delhi on January 10 in 1972, after 290 days of captivity in Pakistan jail.
On the night of March 25, 1971, Pakistan army arrested Bangabandhu from his Dhanmondi residence and sent him to a West Pakistani jail the following day.
Bangabandhu was subjected to inhuman torture in the Pakistan jail where he had been counting moments for the execution of his death sentence that was pronounced in a farcical trial.
