Bangabandhu Tunnel: Work on the second tube to begin next month

About 4 months after the construction of the first tube, Bangladesh Bridge Authority, the project implementing agency, is going to start the construction of the second tube of the Bangabandhu Tunnel under the bottom of Karnafuli River.Engr. Harunur Rashid, Project director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel Project, told media that the construction work of the second and last tube of the country’s first tunnel will start in second week of next month. .
He said construction of the second tube of Bangabandhu Tunnel from Anwara end to Patenga site will start in the second week of December. The second tube will be constructed 12 meters away from the first tube constructed from Chattogram end to Anwara . Engr.Harunur Rashid said that like the first tube, the second tube will gradually go deeper into the soil as it moves from the ground to the river.. The tube will go from 18 meters to 43 meters below the ground. As a result, there will be no problem in the flow of the river.The govt took the initiative to build a tunnel under the Karnafuli River to connect the city’s Patenga and Anwara in south Chattogram to make the port city of Chattogram a ‘One City, Two Town’ model similar to the Chinese city of Shanghai.
In addition to the 3.4 km long main tunnel, a 5.35 km connecting road at the Patenga and Anwara ends and an 826 meter overbridge at the Anwara end are being constructed at a cost of about Tk 10,000 cr.Concerned people said that about 80 percent work of mega project Bangabandhu Tunnel has already been completed. Work is underway to install a 12 -diameter tube from the Chattogram end to the Anwara end, as well as work on connecting the two sides of the tunnel.When the work on the second tube, which is scheduled to start in December, is completed, vehicles will be able to travel at a speed of 60 km per hour through 4 lanes of this tunnel.Vehicles of Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, enter the tunnel at the end of Patenga through City Outer Ring Road and go up to Chaturi Chaumuhani Point of Patia-Anwara-Banshkhali Road junction at the end of Anwara. As a result, modern communication system will be developed between Dhaka-Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar and connection will be established with Asian Highway. Massive development of communication system will be achieved.
In addition, the development of the proposed industrial area on the east bank of the Karnafuli River will be accelerated and improved and easy communication system will be established with Chattogram city, Ctg port and airport located on the western bank. This will reduce travel time and cost and facilitate transportation of industrial raw materials, finished goods to Chattogram port, airport and north-western part of the country.
The establishment of easy communication with the eastern bank of the river Karnafuli will result in the development of tourism in the eastern bank.Engr Harunur Rashid, project director, told media men about the latest position of the construction of Bangabandhu Tunnel.
