Banani double rape case verdict deferred again

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 of Dhaka again deferred the delivery of the verdict in the case filed on the charge of rape of two university students at the Raintree Hotel in the city’s Banani area.
Judge Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar could not deliver the verdict yesterday (Wednesday), as the court activities remained suspended due to the death of veteran lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder, the judge could not come up with the verdict on the day. Later, the judge set November 11 as the next date for delivering the verdict in the case, said Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Afroza Farhana Orange.
The accused people in the case are- Shafat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers’ co-owner, Shafat’s friend Shadman Sakif, a director of Regnum Group, Nayem Ashraf, an employee of E-Makers Event Management, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.
On October 3, ahead of the verdict, the court rejected the accused peoples’ bail pleas and sent them to the jail.
The case was filed against five persons with Banani Police Station on May 6, 2017, for allegedly raping the two students of a private university in Dhaka at gunpoint at a “birthday party” function on March 28 of that year at the Raintree Hotel.
