Banamali made President of UN’s APIS Steering Committee

Director General of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DoICT) Banamali Bhowmik has been made President of the newly formed Steering Committee on Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (APIS) of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) for next one year.
Chief of ICT and Development Section of UNESCAP Atsuko Okuda announced the name of Bhowmick at the first session of APIS Steering Committee held at a local hotel on Wednesday, a release said.
About 100 delegates from different countries and international agencies are attending the two-day session which was concluded on Thursday.
While speaking at a dinner function organized in honor of the delegates, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak expressed gratitude for announcing the name of Director General of DoICT as the chair of the APIS Steering Committee.
In an instant reaction Banamali Bhowmik said not only for him, it’s a great honor for Bangladesh.
“This has created an opportunity for Bangladesh to lead the international forum and play due role to reduce the use of internet broadband of the countries of Asia-Pacific region,” he said adding, “the DoICT will put its best endeavor to implement the APIS master plan that envisioned to establish seamless digital network.”
Earlier, Bangladesh was made chair of the Working Group of APIS at the second meeting on the Working Group of APIS held at Guangzhou of China from 29-30 August 2016.
