Hundreds of protesters, including slain Abrar Farhad’s teachers and fellows, on Wednesday issued seven-day ultimatum to authorities concerned to a complete ban of students politics at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) campus.
The demonstrators who have been protesting on the campus since the brutal murder of their fellow Abrar Fahad gave the authorities until October 15 to ensure the ban.
They placed a fresh 10-point demand following a silent procession on the campus, which also included capital punishment to the killers, expulsion of all the accused from the university.
The teachers association’s President Dr AKM Masud made the announcement while addressing demonstrating students, demanding justice for Abrar Fahim, at Buet campus intersection on Wednesday.
“We have come to a decision to ban teacher politics at the university. Student politics will also be banned soon,” he told the protesters.
He also said the decision was taken at the association’s emergency meeting held at 10am on Wednesday morning.
The protesters also demanded the Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Saiful Islam to come to the BUET campus by 2:00pm on day (Wednesday) and answer all questions of the students which includes his explanation as to why he failed to show up on the campus even after thirty hours of Abrar Fahad’s killing.
Students also demanded an end to all sorts of ragging in the residential halls. They wanted a common platform (website, forum) which will have all such incidents that have previously occurred and will contain details of the legal progress.
BUET Institutional Information System account needs to be used for this platform and work in this regard needs to be visible by October 11, the students demanded.
CCTV cameras should be installed on both sides of every wing of the residential halls, the students added.
They also demanded expulsion of all the identified killers from BUET for life within 72 hours, trial of the Abrar murder case at a speedy tribunal, and expulsion of those involved in ragging students at Buet dormitories.
Abrar, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department at BUET, was beaten to death on Monday.
Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.
Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder. Abrar’s death sparked protest across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of now, 13 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
