BAU Correspondent :
The teachers of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) boycotted all classes and examinations and met in an emergency meeting on Thursday to demand ban on students’ politics on the campus in the greater academic interest.
They also called the BAU authorities to bring the students, who defamed a teacher on Wednesday evening to justice.
BAU Teachers Association (BAUTA) summoned the meeting in this connection at the Microbiology gallery to discuss the latest campus situation at around 8:30 pm, said BAUTA Secretary
Professor Dr Md Abu Hadi Nur Ali Khan. The teachers in the meeting discussed the campus situation and urged the government to take necessary steps to punish the miscreants as per the supplementary probe report on the Saad killing incident submitted to Vice-Chancellor on May 18.
Sources said that a group of students on Wednesday locked Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain Chowdhury Rana of Agricultural Chemistry Department with an employee and a woman in his office room at about 5:30pm. He is also a member of the appointment committee of BAU.
Proctor and Chief Security Officer along with some other teachers rescued the teacher at around 7:30pm. The employee named Ashraful is a 4th class master roll employee of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology faculty of BAU. Police took both Asraful and Nupur in custody.
The students at that time raised slogans against the teacher and brought out a procession on the campus, condemning the scandalous.
In contrast, Professor Rana alleged that the president of BAU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) did it to harass him only. But President of BAU unit of BCL Mursheduzzaman Khan Babu rejected the allegation against him.
In this connection, a five members probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident with advice to submit their report within 3 working days.
On the other hand, the leaders of Students’ Association of all faculties called on Students’ Affairs Adviser in his office to talk about resumption of the classes and examinations.
