Ban on gambling in 13 clubs upheld

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a High Court (HC) order that imposed sanction on gambling in 13 renowned clubs of the country. The apex court said, the HC order will remain in force until further order.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Dhaka Club authorities seeking a stay on the HC order. The bench asked the Dhaka Club authorities to submit a leave to appeal petition against the HC order on Sunday.
The HC on December 4 directed the government to immediately stop gambling including cards, dice and housie at 13 renowned clubs.
The 13 clubs are- Dhaka Club, Uttara Club Ltd, Gulshan Club Ltd, Dhanmondi Club Ltd, Banani Club Ltd, Officers’ Club Dhaka, Ladies’ Club Dhaka, Cadet College Club Dhaka, Chittagong Club Ltd, Chittagong Seniors’ Club Ltd, Narayanganj Club Ltd, Sylhet Club Ltd and Khulna Club Ltd.
On that day, the HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks as to why they should not be directed to take actions against the unlawful business and indoor games of cards, dice and housie in exchange of money.
On December 6, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division stayed the HC order for a day following the petition filed by Dhaka Club.
Two Supreme Court lawyers Samiul Huq and Barrister Rokonuddin Md Faruq filed the petition challenging the ligality of unlawful business and indoor games of cards, dice and housie in exchange of money in those clubs.
Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal took part in the hearing on behalf of the Dhaka Club while Advocate A F Hasan Arif stood for the petitioners.
