Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has prohibited carrying swords, chains, knives and blades in the Tajia processions on the Day of Ashura in order to avoid any untoward incident.
On the day, a section of the Shia Muslims cut their own bodies with knives and blades to mark the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SM) at Karbala in Iraq.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah made the announcement at a program organised on the occasion of K-9 Squad’s training completion on Thursday.
“Some of them always wear shackles and carry swords, machetes, knives and spears during their procession taken out from Old Dhaka’s Hussaini Dalan. We like to remind them that such processions could not be taken out now due to security reasons,” the DMP boss said.
“We have talked with the Shia Muslims and they have agreed to comply with,” he said.
Regarding Tajia procession, the DMP Commissioner said, preparation has been taken to install adequate lights in the Hossaini Dalan area.
Last year, incidents of mugging took place during the Tajia procession and a bomb explosion claimed one dead and several others injured at dawn.
Besides, the police have taken all necessary measures to ensure adequate security for Durga Puja, the biggest Hindu religious festival, Asaduzzaman Miah said.
The immersion of Durga’s idol will be done the same day.
The DMP Commissioner said police and RAB would work together with local residents and take separate measures for each Puja pavilion across the city.
Plaincloths police will be on patrol and close circuit cameras will be installed through various key points. The streets will be illuminated adequately, he said.
