Staff Reporter : Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday asked the Myanmar to allow Rohingyas to return their places of origin in Rakhine state “freely and safely”.
He said a political solution is very much important to end the Rohingya crisis, and allowing their return would be the helpful for it.
“There should be a political solution. And allowing Rohingays to their original places in Myanmar is very important to end the crisis,” the UN former Secretary General said it to journalist after his meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at a city hotel.
Ban Ki-moon commended Bangladesh’s role for sheltering over 1.1 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar camps.
He also sought continued support for Rohingyas from UN agencies and humanitarian organisations.
Describing his experience of visiting Rohingya camp last time the UN former chief said, “It was hard to describe.”
Ban Ki-Moon, the current chairman of Global Commission on Adaptation, appreciated Bangladesh’s role on adaptation of climate change. He said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.
The former UN chief arrived Dhaka on Friday night. He is scheduled to attend the 13th convocation of Brac University to be held at the Army Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
President Abdul Hamid is also scheduled to attend the convocation ceremony.
Vice-Chancellor of Brac University Professor Vincent Chang and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present.
He will leave Dhaka at 6:30pm on the day.
In July last, Moon attended the ‘Dhaka Meeting of the Global Commission on Adaptation’ held in the capital.
