Shooter Abdullah Hel Baki won the silver medal for Bangladesh in the 10-metre air rifle event in the 20th Commonwealth Games (CG) in Glasgow on Friday.
This is the first individual medal for Bangladesh, the fifth in shooting, in the Commonwealth Games in 12 years since Asif Hossain Khan stunned India’s Abhinav Bindra in 2002 at Manchester to win the gold.
Baki also qualified for the shoot-off after finishing fifth in the qualifying round.
But, he fell narrowly short to Bindra, an Olympic gold medalist, who took the gold. The bronze was taken by English shooter Daniel Rivers.
After a contesting battle with his Indian counterpart Bindra, Baki lost his nerve in the last two shots of the shoot-off round to finish with 202.1 points while Bindra clinched gold with 205.3 points and Rivers scored 182.4 points.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 10-metre air pistol event, Bangladeshi shooter Armin Asha failed to continue her qualifying round’s form as she finished last in the shoot-off round after qualifying for the final round by placing sixth.
