After a long waiting Bagerhat-Tungipara via Chitalmari and Patgati-40 kilometer long road will be constructed into an inter-district Highway in three packages at cost of Tk one hundred 12 crores , reliable source of the Roads and Highways Department said .
The construction work will be started in the current fiscal year and will be completed within 30th June in the year of 2019.
According to Alhaj Mujibor Rahman Shamim, Chairman , Chitaalmari Upazila Parishad in Bagerhat , the highway will be constructed with the initiative of Sheikh Helal Uddin, nephew of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and MP of Bagerhnat Constituency-1.
The upazila chairman further told the newsmen; on hearing the news of the construction of the highway people of Bagerhnat Sadar, Chitalmari and Tugipara Upazila (in Gopalganj district) are very much pleased. Chitalmari is agriculture and fish -based upazila. So, huge quantities of vegetables and fish are produced in the Upazila every year. But due to lack of good communication with the outside areas the producers of vegetables and fish cannot sell their products at reasonable prices. If the proposed Bagerhat-Tungipara highway is constructed within the scheduled time the vegetables and fish products of Chitalmari Upazila can be sent to Dhaka, Khulna and other places within the short time and consequently, the farmers will get the fair prices of their products and the economy of the area will gain strength. Not only that but also it will play an important role in the communication sector of the south-west region of he country. It will also be possible to go to the 2 sea ports-Mongla and Paira and 2 divisional towns-Khulna and Barisal within a short time.
Md Anisuzzaman Masud, Executive Engineer , Roads and Highways , Bagerhat said , Bagerhat-Tungipara-40 kilometer long road is going to be an inter-district Highway. After the project was passed finally in the ECNEC a tender was invited for the construction of the road by this time. But due to non-availability of a quality tender the re-tender process is ongoing. He added, if the construction work of this inter-district highway is completed it will be connected with Bagerhat-Khulna-Mongla highway.
The proposed highway will be constructed at a cost of Tk.112 crs. The present Depara Bailey Bridge on the road under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila will be replaced with a RCC with PC Guarders Bridge. He added such 4 more bridges and 8 culverts will be constructed on the different places of the highway. The Executive engineer added, the construction work of the purposed highway will be started in the current financial year and it will be completed by the 30th June in the year 2019 into 3 packages.
After the completion of the construction of the proposed highway it be possible to the world heritage and the biggest mangrove forest Sundarbans via Sharankhola and to go to the 2nd Sea Port of the country Mongbla via Bagerhat within a short time. On the other hand, the communication of this area with the capital city Dhaka via Padma Bridge will be easier and less time consuming.
