Mahalaya celebrated in Bagerhat
The Benagalee Hindu Community of Bagerhat district town and it’s all the 9 Upazilas as elsewhere of the country (as well as also outside of the country) celebrated the Mahalaya , the auspicious occasion heralding the advent of the Goddess Durga on Saturday.
With the beginning of ‘Devipaksha’, Mahalaya was observed 7 days ago before ‘Durga Puja’, the biggest and the most important religious festival of the Hindu community.
Mahalaya marked an invitation of sorts to Goddess Durga to begin her journey from Kailash to he? paternal home (earth), along with her children.
This invitation was extended through the chanting of Mantros (sacred text/speech) from Sri Sri Chandi and singing devotional songs. Countdown of Durga Puja began with the celebration of Mahalaya.
On October 4, the Durga Puja bean with different rituals on the day of Mahalaya.
On the occasion of the day, special programmes of Mahalaya were arranged at different Mandirs (temples) in the district and as elsewhere of the country.
Human chain formed
Under the auspices of SANAC (Sachetan Nagarik Committee), Bagerhat with the assistance of TIB (Transparency International Bangladesh) a human chain was formed in front of Bagerhat Press Club on Friday in the morning for demanding the maintenance of transparency, accountability and participation of the people in the distribution of the fund given by the developed countries to the affected countries for the climate change with Prof. Chowdhury Abdur Rob, President of SANAC, Bagerhat in the chair.
Babul Sardar, convener of the sub-committee for climate change affair of SANAC explained the need and importance of forming the human chain in his address of welcome. The human chain was addressed among others by, SANAC member, Shaikh Mujibor Rahman, SAJAN members Dr. Geanranjan Chakrbarty, Adv. Shirin Aktar Kachi, Shaikh Hemayet Hossain, journalist Shaikh Abu Sayeed, Shaikh Bashir Ahmed, Bagerhat Area Manager, of TIB, Yes member Humyra Khatun. All the speakers emphasized on the topic. The Human chain was conducted by Yes member Kazi Mizanur Rahman.
World Tourism Day observed
Under the auspices of Bagerhat district administration the World Tourism Day was observed in Bagerhat district town and it’s all the 9 Upazilas in a befitting manner on Friday.
On the occasion a grand motorcade rally that was arranged by the district Administration brought out from the local Swadhinata Udyan in the morning (at 9 am), paraded the main roads of the district town and ended at the historic Saitgumbaz mosque premises, 7 kilometers off the district town. The rally was led by Al-haj Dr. Mozammel Hossain, MP of Bagerhat Constitutep-4 and a former minister, Md. Mamunur Rashid, DC, Bagerhat and Pankaj Chandra Roy, Police Super of Bagerhat while it was attended by almost all the district and Sadar Upazila level officers, teachers and students of educational institutions and the heads of socio-cultural organizations. Later the days programme was ceremonially inaugurated by the chief guest Al-haj Dr. Mozammel Hossain, MP after releasing the multicoloured balloons in the air. It was followed with a lively discussion meeting on significance and the importance of the day. The day’s programme was ended with a colourful boat race held in the adjacent historic Ghora Dighi (lake).
Price of eggs shot up again
Price of all kinds of eggs has once again shot up by Tk.2 or more per hally of four. Per hally of four farm produced eggs is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.36 or more according to sizes as against of Tk.32 only 2/3 days ago. Supply of the locally produced poultry eggs is extremely poor and their size is very small. It is, if available, now being sold here at Tk.52 or more per hally of four instead of Tk.48 previously. Farm produced egg of duck is not at all available in the local markets. Price of locally produced duck-egg is also high. It is now being sold at Tk.52 or more per hally of four instead of Tk.48.
Due to the high price of fish and meats common people who used to take eggs as their substitute have been thrown into utter distress for sudden rise of price of eggs. On the other hand, the rising prices of onion and green chilli which are regarded as the must items for Bengali kitchen also affected the people in general and the commoners in particular.
