BAF to get modern copters, planes: PM

Reaffirming her resolve to turn Bangladesh Air Force into a strategically and technically capable force, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the force will get Mi- 171 and YAK -130 helicopters and PT-6 and LET-410 planes soon.
She said this while addressing the induction ceremony of the newly procured K-8W Trainer Aircraft to the fleet of Bangladesh Air Force at BAF Base Bangabandhu at city’s Kurmitola.
Hasina said, Bangladesh Air Force will be turned into a strategically and technically sound, strong, and capable force through its further modernisation by 2021, the Golden Jubilee of the country’s independence.
K-8W is a Chinese-built jet trainer with state of art digital cockpit for basic and advanced jet training.
The aircraft has better ergonomics and improved capability compared to earlier versions of K-8W aircraft. It has modern avionics like
Head Up Display (HUD), Multi-Function Display (MFD), customised GPS system with digital moving map.
Hasina expressed her high hopes that the induction of K-8W jet trainer will raise Bangladesh Air Force’s training capability to international standards and training would be safer and faster.
Besides, she said, the state of art technological materials, establishments, and modern management will expedite the efficiency, and operational capability of Bangladesh Air Force.
Hasina said, her government, despite financial constraint, wants to build the armed force as an efficient, well equipped and modern force and will do whatever necessary to this end.
She expressed her strong belief that new generation technical equipment and better management will enhance the Air Force’s expertise and operational capacity.
The Prime Minister said, she believes the BAF members will build themselves as qualified pilots for the new aircraft and the trainer pilots will show their higher flying efficiency through providing training not only at home but abroad, too.
Mentioning that the BAF members, working in the UN peacekeeping mission, earned pride and praise for the nation and hoped that they will bring more achievements for the nation.
Hasina said her government during its current tenure is working relentlessly to modernise the Air Force and enhancing its capability in light with Forces Goal 2030.
During its previous tenure bought, the PM said, her government Mig-29 Fighter Plane of the 4th Generation, C-130 Cargo Plane and added high-tech powerful and sophisticated Radar system in the Air Force to protect the country’s airspace.
Mi- 171 helicopter, PT -6 and LET-410 planes and YAK -130 helicopter will be added to the fleet soon, she added.
Hasina said work on the construction of Bangabandhu Complex at Jessore Air Force Academy is progressing fast and a new air defence radar is being installed in Cox’s Bazar to ensure a full-time surveillance on the airspace over huge exclusive economic zone in the maritime boundary.
The Prime Minister formally handed over Induction Order of K-8W to commander of the parade Wing Commander Sharif Mustafa. On the occasion, a smartly turned out parade was arranged. The Prime Minister reviewed the parade and took salute.
After the parade, the Prime Minister witnessed a colourful flying display of the newly inducted K-8W trainer aircraft.
Earlier, on her arrival at BAF Base Bangabandhu, Air Chief Air Marshal Mohammad Enamul Bari and Air Officer Commanding of the base Air Commodore M Obaidur Rahman received the Prime Minister. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, PM’s advisers, ambassadors, the chief of the Naval Staff, the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division and high military and civil officials attended the function.
