BSS, Dhaka :
A Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) contingent overnight flew to Mali to replace an existing detachment of theirs as part of UN peacekeeping mission in the troubled West African country, an ISPR statement said here yesterday.
It said 123-men contingent comprised BAF’s Utility Aviation Unit and Bangladesh Airfield Support and Management Unit-2, led by Air Commodore M Shafiqul Alam and Group Captain Mostaque Ahmad respectively.
The statement said senior BAF officials saw the
contingent off at the Hazrat Shahjahal International Airport (HSIA) offering a special munajat last night while a UN-chartered aircraft carried them to Mali, the scene of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA).
MINUSMA was established under a UN Security Council resolution in April 2013 to support political processes in that country and carry out a number of security-related tasks.
The mission was asked to support the transitional authorities of Mali in the stabilization of the country and implementation of the transitional roadmap.
On 1 July 2013, 6,000 of a future total of 12,600 UN peacekeeping troops officially took over responsibility for patrolling the country’s north from France and the ECOWAS’ International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA). The group is expected to play a role in the 2013 Malian presidential election.[7] The force is the third largest UN peacekeeping force in operation in the world.
